About Breast Reduction

Having oversized breasts can take a serious psychological toll. (1) Breast reduction surgery, otherwise known as reduction mammaplasty, is a cosmetic surgery that can address oversized, sagging and uneven breasts. During the procedure, a surgeon removes excess tissue, fat and skin from the breasts, resizing and reshaping them to become smaller and shapelier. This treatment is both corrective and cosmetic, addressing the problems that large breasts can cause while simultaneously enhancing their appearance.

Breast reduction surgery can alleviate the pain and discomfort that large breasts sometimes cause. It can make you more comfortable in your skin, and free you of all the constraints that large breasts may impose.

There are a few different techniques for breast reduction. These techniques are chosen based on the size and shape of the breasts.

Lollipop Breast Reduction

Lollipop, or “vertical” breast reduction, is best for patients with moderately-oversized breasts and visible sagging. For this technique, a surgeon makes two incisions, one spanning the edge of the areola, and one moving vertically from the bottom of the areola to the crease beneath the breast (the inframammary fold). Through this incision the surgeon can remove excess fat, breast tissue, and skin. Then they reshape the breast from the inside and lift it to a perkier height. The surgery does leave noticeable scarring, though it only appears on the bottom half of the breast and can be concealed by a bra or bikini-top.

Inverted-T Breast Reduction

Inverted-T, or “anchor” breast reduction is useful for patients with significantly large, sagging or asymmetrical breasts. The incision points are the same as the lollipop breast reduction with one additional incision horizontally along the inframammary fold. With this additional incision, a surgeon can remove and manipulate the fat, breast tissue, and skin with more efficiency.

Liposuction for Breast Reduction

In certain cases, liposuction is all you need for a successful breast reduction. It involves small incisions through which the surgeon removes excess fat. This technique works well for patients who only need a slight reduction, and who suffer mostly from excess fat in the breasts.

Benefits of Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery can alleviate the discomfort that large breasts can cause. These effects include:

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Rash or skin irritation below the breast
  • Nerve pain

With more moderately-sized breasts, you can participate in all the activities that large breasts have kept you from doing. You will be able to move about more freely and exercise with greater ease. You won’t have deep shoulder grooves from your bra straps anymore, and you will be able to fit into bras and tops a lot easier. Reducing and enhancing your breasts with breast reduction surgery can improve your self-esteem and help you feel comfortable in your own body.

Who is a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

An ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery will have breasts that keep them from living the life they want to live. They will want relief from the pain that their breasts cause them, and the constraints that they impose. If this sounds like you, then breast reduction surgery could be the solution you’ve been looking for.

We do not recommend breast reduction surgery if you are not at a steady weight. It is important that your health be optimal so that you may recover from your surgery swiftly and safely. If you plan on becoming pregnant or gaining weight, you should wait to have a breast reduction. Gaining weight may offset the effects that this treatment can bring you.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

At Millard Plastic Surgery, we offer cosmetic treatments that correspond with and complement breast reduction surgery.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic treatment in which a surgeon removes excess fat from parts of the body that are resistant to diet and exercise. The treatment involves small incisions, through which a surgeon removes and contours fat with a small tube called a cannula. This treatment is often used in the process of breast reduction, though it can be applied to other parts of the body as well.

Abdominoplasty

The Tummy Tuck is a cosmetic treatment that addresses excess fat, sagging skin and weakened muscles in the abdomen. It is also a common part of the highly customizable Mommy Makeover. There are many variations of the tummy tuck, but the common goal is to flatten and tighten the abdomen. The treatment involves making incisions in the abdomen, where liposuction is typically used to remove fat, and skin is removed and repositioned to reduce sagging. The surgeon also sutures the muscle and its surrounding tissue to become more firm. In conjunction with a breast reduction, you can enjoy the benefits of a totally refined torso.
