About Rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty is a procedure that reshapes and restructures the nose to increase or restore functionality while also improving the aesthetic appearance. There are many benefits of receiving a rhinoplasty, both reconstructive and cosmetic. A rhinoplasty can help shape features such as wide nostrils, a large hump, or a bulbous nose tip, leaving the face more proportionate and symmetrical. Patients with structural and functional nasal issues, such as a deviated septum or reduced airflow, can see improved ease of breathing. A rhinoplasty procedure can also help restore the nose after an injury or trauma and even address certain congenital deformities. (1)

Candidates

Candidates interested in a rhinoplasty procedure are those who are interested in aesthetically enhancing the look or restoring the functionality of their noses. Individuals experiencing difficulty breathing or recurring nasal infections, as well as those unsatisfied with the symmetry or shape of their nose, are all potential candidates for this procedure. All candidates interested in a rhinoplasty procedure should be in good overall health and free from any underlying medical conditions that may impair the healing process.

Patients should pre-arrange transportation home after their treatment. It is required to have a trusted friend or family member to assist with tasks for the first 24 hours of healing. If applicable, those who smoke should be prepared to quit a few weeks before the procedure and refrain from tobacco or nicotine until fully recovered or approved by Dr. Hendrick.

Procedure

The procedure begins with the administration of an anesthetic to ensure each patient feels comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure. Rhinoplasty can be performed using multiple methods, however, at Millard Plastic Surgery, we utilize the open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty techniques. An open rhinoplasty is when the incision is made through the tissue in between the nostrils. This area is known as the columella. A closed rhinoplasty utilizes incisions made inside the nostril, leaving no visible scars after healing. (3)

After creating an incision, Dr. Hendrick will reshape the cartilage and bone in the nose. This can be done in multiple ways, all providing unique benefits to the receiver. The nose can be reshaped through the repositioning of bone, removal of excess tissue, or done through the use of cartilage grafting. Cartilage grafts can be taken from other parts of the body such as the ribs or ear. (3)

If the patient is correcting functionality issues, such as a deviated septum, Dr. Hedrick will go and strengthen the nasal septum before closing the incisions and redraping the skin. A rhinoplasty procedure can take a few hours depending on the anatomy of the patient, their desired outcome, and the complexity of the procedure.

Recovery & Results

Rhinoplasty Dr. David Hendrick Millard Plastic Surgery

Following a rhinoplasty procedure, patients should follow any post-operative instructions given by Dr. Hendrick or another member of our team to ensure an optimal recovery. Patients may experience some discomfort or pain, however this can be managed through the use of pain medication. Bruising and swelling are common and can be experienced around the treatment site for the first 2-3 weeks of healing before subsiding. Please refrain from strenuous tasks or physical activity for a few weeks after healing, as well as wearing glasses on the nose until further approved.

Patients will most likely be required to wear a nasal splint for the first week following their treatment. This splint is removed by Dr. Hendrick at the first follow-up appointment. We ask that patients attend these follow-up appointments so our team can help monitor their healing progress and ensure ideal results.

While there are visibly noticeable changes after removing the nasal splint, patients can see the full effects of the procedure after 6-12 months of healing. Patients who underwent structural corrections will be able to experience breathing and other functional improvements within weeks of their treatment.

Rhinoplasty procedures have a high satisfaction rate as patients can enjoy their newly contoured noses with no restrictions. The results of a rhinoplasty are permanent, offering patients a life-lasting confidence boost.
